Mark Rijkse’s FAST40+ 42 South championed the big boat class IRC Zero at Cowes Week 2019, winning with a score of only seven points. 42 South is a highly modified Reichel-Pugh designed GP42, optimised to race in the Fast 40+ class. Mark Rijkse’s FAST40+ team has shown how competitive these boats are racing under IRC class events as well as the FAST40+ Race Circuit.

Cowes Week took place 10-17 August 2019 providing conditions testing all aspects of sailing skills, the biggest range of start-line situations, speed and navigation. While the weather on Friday 16th was still mild under the shelter of the lsland shore, later in the day larger pockets of wind could be seen further of offshore, although the sea was fairly smooth considering.

“It was very choppy upwind, and tricky to steer. We’ve not had the boat out in big winds this year so it took a while to settle down. She is a slim boat so ultimately we found the groove upwind and we did well there and benefitted from the favourable tide upwind. She is also fast downwind so, with some good trimming onboard and some good tactical calls downwind, it all helped us take the first win of the week.” Mark Rijkse – IRC Class 0, 42 South

Congratulations to Mark Rijkse and his team aboard 42 South on a great result at Cowes Week!
